Why Diversify?

Reduce Risk

Spreading exposure can reduce the effect of one asset's price move on the total portfolio, depending on position size and how the assets move together.

Broaden Exposure

Different crypto sectors have different technologies and risks. Holding several sectors broadens exposure but also introduces more assets to research and monitor.

Compare Scenarios

Common Diversification Mistakes

Adding tokens without identifying a distinct exposure can increase fees, security work, and monitoring without meaningfully changing concentration.
Assets in the same category may share market drivers, but labels alone do not establish correlation. Measure it over a stated dataset and window.
Adding an asset because it is trending can change portfolio risk. Document its role, risks, and sizing rule before changing an allocation.
Stablecoins add issuer, reserve, redemption, depegging, custody, and smart-contract risks. Holding one is not required for diversification.
Price moves can change portfolio weights. Decide in advance whether, when, and how to rebalance after considering costs and taxes.
Holding many tokens from one sector can leave shared technology, liquidity, governance, or regulatory exposures.

Crypto portfolio diversification is the practice of spreading exposure across more than one asset, category, or ecosystem. It can reduce dependence on a single holding, but it does not eliminate losses: many crypto assets can move together or share custody, liquidity, protocol, and regulatory risks.

There is no universally appropriate number. The relevant questions are how much each position contributes to risk, whether holdings share the same underlying exposures, and whether you can research, secure, tax-report, and monitor them. More tokens do not automatically mean more diversification.

There is no neutral percentage that fits every investor. A Bitcoin weight is an individual decision based on loss capacity, objectives, time horizon, liquidity needs, other assets, and local tax and regulatory considerations. Percentages shown in this guide are illustrative inputs, not targets.

Stablecoins can provide a crypto-denominated liquidity position, but they are not the same as insured bank cash. They introduce issuer, reserve, depegging, custody, smart-contract, redemption, and regulatory risks. Whether to use one depends on its role and on your assessment of those risks.

A rebalancing rule can be calendar-based, threshold-based, or a combination. No schedule is inherently best. Compare turnover, fees, taxes, liquidity, slippage, and the amount of drift you are willing to accept before choosing and documenting a rule.

Core-satellite is an allocation structure in which a larger group of holdings follows one rule and smaller satellite positions follow another. The labels do not determine which assets belong in either group, and the example weights in this guide are hypothetical.

It can increase or decrease returns relative to a concentrated portfolio. The result depends on the selected assets, weights, correlations, fees, taxes, rebalancing rules, and measurement period. Diversification does not guarantee smaller drawdowns or higher risk-adjusted returns.

Fractional units can make multiple positions possible, but adding positions may also increase fees, spreads, tax records, and monitoring work. Start by defining the risks you want to avoid and test hypothetical allocations before deciding whether another holding changes those exposures meaningfully.

Using multiple custodians can reduce dependence on one provider while increasing account-security and recordkeeping complexity. Self-custody substitutes key-management and operational risks for exchange counterparty risk. Review legal ownership, withdrawal controls, insurance terms, and recovery procedures for each arrangement.

A DeFi position may add smart-contract, oracle, governance, bridge, liquidation, impermanent-loss, and token-incentive risks. A protocol audit does not remove those risks. Treat DeFi as a distinct exposure to analyze rather than assuming it diversifies a portfolio.

A meaningful comparison should state the data source, return interval, observation window, and as-of date; asset labels alone do not establish low correlation.
